The Most Powerful Skincare Change I Ever Made Had Nothing to Do With Skincare

When I turned 40, I started taking a deeper look into my skin. Not just the products I was using, but what was happening inside my body. I became curious about inflammation, sleep, hormones, stress, migraines, mental health, and healthy aging. The more I learned, the more I realized that healthy skin isn't created by one or two products. It's the result of creating an environment where the body and the skin can thrive.
Over the last decade, I've made lots of small changes. But there is one lifestyle change that has probably had the biggest impact on my sleep, my migraines, my energy, the way I've experienced menopause, and the health of my skin.
I stopped drinking alcohol.
Now before you stop reading, let me say this isn't a post telling you not to drink.
It's simply sharing one decision that has had a positive impact on my skin and overall wellness.
Years ago, the conversation around alcohol was very different. We were told that a glass of red wine each night was good for our hearts. Today, the science has shifted. We now know that no amount of alcohol has been shown to improve overall health (see the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Alcohol and Cancer Risk). That doesn't mean no one should ever drink. It simply changes the conversation.
Today I'm 52, and looking back, I honestly believe giving up alcohol has made a bigger difference than I ever expected. My sleep became more consistent. My migraines became less frequent. I feel more mentally clear. And from a skincare perspective, it fits everything I believe about supporting healthy skin. Alcohol contributes to dehydration and increases inflammation, two things that work against healthy, resilient skin.
I rarely talk about this decision. My friends know I don't drink, and it's simply not an issue. There is still a common belief that drinking and having fun go hand in hand. People will jokingly say, "Remember the old Tracy?" or "Back when you used to drink..." To be completely honest, even as an adult, I felt the pressure around drinking. It surprised me how often I found myself explaining or defending a choice that felt deeply personal. Now, with a decade of alcohol-free living behind me, I no longer feel insecure about that decision. I'm simply grateful I made it.
I do think we're living through an interesting cultural shift. You don't have to look very hard to see it. Nearly every restaurant now has a mocktail menu. Grocery stores are filling shelves with alcohol-free wines, beers, and adaptogenic drinks.
Recently my husband and I spent time in Massachusetts with my college-aged daughter and two of her friends. Everyone else enjoyed drinks throughout the week. We went to the beach, played hours of kickball in the backyard, laughed non-stop and just had the best time together. I did not feel like I missed out on one bit of fun by having a mocktail instead of alcohol. In fact, I think I was able to enjoy it even more, being fully in the moment and appreciating the rare time we were able to spend with my daughter and her friends.
One of her friends asked me why I don't drink. My answer surprised even me because it was so simple.
"My sleep is my number one priority."
"I love waking up early, feeling ready to enjoy the next day."
"I've realized I don't need alcohol to have fun."
"And honestly? As an esthetician, it's probably the most effective thing I've ever done for my skin."
Healthy skin has never been about finding the perfect cream. It's about consistently creating an environment where my body can recover, my inflammation stays lower, my sleep is protected, and my skin has the opportunity to do what it was designed to do.
Giving up alcohol has been one piece of that puzzle. Every body is different, and every person gets to decide what works for them. This simply happens to be one of the best decisions I've made for my skin and my overall health.
SKIN BENEFITS OF ELIMINATING ALCOHOL
Brighter, healthier-looking skin
Alcohol can contribute to dehydration, making skin appear dull or tired. Better hydration often means skin looks plumper and more radiant.
Better hydration
Even occasional drinking can leave skin temporarily dehydrated. Well-hydrated skin generally has a healthier barrier and smoother appearance.
Less redness
Alcohol can dilate blood vessels and trigger flushing in some people, especially those prone to rosacea or facial redness. It also can worsen visible capillaries in people who are already susceptible.
Less inflammation
Chronic, unnecessary inflammation can affect both how skin looks and how it functions.
A stronger skin barrier
Better hydration and less irritation can help the skin barrier function more effectively, with less sensitivity and dryness.
Better overnight repair
Quality sleep is when a significant portion of the skin's repair processes take place. Because alcohol can interfere with sleep, your skin cannot repair itself as effectively.
Less puffiness
Many people notice less facial swelling, particularly around the eyes.
More even skin tone
Reduced redness and inflammation create a more even complexion.
Better collagen protection
Alcohol increases oxidative stress and can contribute to inflammation. Reducing those stressors can help protect collagen over the long term.
Fewer "tired skin" days
Puffy, dry, blotchy, red, or slightly gray skin are all indicators of tired skin. These problems are diminished or eliminated.
When I am out with friends I definitely want something other than water. Most places have mocktails now, but you do need to be careful that you are not drinking a ton of sugar. I like to order sparkling mineral water with fresh limes and a salted rim. Sometimes I ask if they have any fresh herbs like rosemary or mint to throw in there, also.
One of my favorite alcohol-free alternatives is Pique. Their botanical blends feel like a wellness ritual rather than a sugary mocktail, and they're made with clean, high-quality ingredients. Two of my favorites:
Pique Life Vesper Adaptogenic Aperitif + Sparkling Mineral Water + salted rim
Pique Matcha mixed with sparkling water, fresh lime squeeze, and a pinch of sea salt + salted rim
